Choosing a mattress is overwhelming experience with various brands, models and prices. Don’t let yourself get confused or exhausted! Knowing what you’re looking for is important, although the process for choosing a mattress may be the same for everyone, priorities are vary with individuals.
Searching for the perfect mattress is well worth the effort. Here we’re sharing some simple buying tips to help you to make a right decision.
Comfort is subjective – There is no universal mattress for everyone.
Comfort is a fancy way of saying how firm or cushiony a mattress will be. The level of support, firmness and size of the mattress all contribute to overall comfort. If you share a bed with someone regularly or every night, we recommend to bring them along and ask them to try it out in the store. Don’t try to select a mattress for someone else because each individual has different comfort preference.
Make sure you wear comfortable clothes and shoes that can be easily removed while testing out mattress in store. Don’t shop tired because all the mattresses will feel great if you’re already sleepy!
Mattress types
The right mattress for you is a matter of personal preference. There’s no “best mattress” for everyone. Each mattress has individual feel: Innerspring mattress feel well, springy. Memory Foam mattress feel haggy. Latex mattress feels floaty.
There are three basic categories of mattresses.
- Specialty foam. These will usually be made of different types of foam. Two categories of specialty foam are latex and memory foam.
- Innerspring. These are the traditional mattresses with springs or coils.
- Hybrid. In recent years, many mattresses combine features of more than one type – innerspring with memory foam.
Mattress Firmness
Do you prefer a soft mattress, a firm one, or somewhere in between? Most mattress types come in a range of comfort levels; the right one for you depends on the way you sleep. A lot of people don’t really know their preference until they have tested out a few to find the one that’s just right.
In order to test each mattress, try lying down in your preferred sleeping positions and stay there for a bit.
Firm: If you sleep on your stomach, a firm mattress provides more spinal support, making them good for posture and back pain.
Medium: If you sleep on your back, it’ll provide support for your spine, back and neck while keeping you comfortable. If you’re a combination sleeper (i.e, someone who switches between position consider medium firmness level). That way your mattress will be neither too soft nor too firm for whatever position you take throughout the night.
Soft: Side sleepers usually prefer soft because it’ll support and contour your body’s curves.
Mattress Sizes
Another important factor is to choose a mattress size that will allow you freedom of motion while you sleep and will help you relax. The size of mattress you need will generally depend on your height, whether you sleep alone or with a partner, what position you sleep in as well as size of the room. Standard mattress sizes are shown below:
Mattress Size | Metric Measurements (mm) |
---|---|
Single | 1880 x 915 |
Long Single | 2030 x 915 |
King Single | 2030 x 1070 |
Double | 1880 x 1370 |
Queen | 2030 x 1530 |
King | 2030 X 1825 |
Super King | 2030 X 2030 |
Lie down and take your time
Most people need seven to nine hours sleep a night. While testing your mattress you should lie down in your natural sleeping position, roll over, sit up, get in and out of the bed. Find out is there enough space? Are the hips and shoulders comfortable or not? Test your mattress as long as you need so you make more adequate buying decision. Take your time when buying a mattress in store and don’t afraid to ask the salesperson to leave you to it. Your comfort is what is most important, we promise we don’t mind at all!
Mattress features and design
Make an effort to study all of the available information about the product. Every mattress has multiple components, and you should know what goes into each one. Ask questions about the features, about the display model and design. Ask questions such as what’s inside the mattress? Will the mattress keep me cool? If you have any doubts, ask sales person to write it down the key product information for you.
Mattress Budget
Many people who I talk to have no idea what a mattress is supposed to cost. It’s important to set yourself a budget. You can always find mattresses at rock-bottom prices. But remember that best quality mattress will keep you comfortable for longer, saving you money in the long run. There are few tricks to save one-thirds off the asking price while shopping for the most of the mattress such as wait for a sale, haggle, buy in bulk, head in to the store because generally they have better deals than online.
Decide on a base
A good base can make all the difference to your mattress. Without a firm base, a mattress is more vulnerable to sagging and general wear and tear. A mattress needs a base to raise it to a comfortable height and provide adequate support. Conversely, if you use a poor quality bed base then you will limit the benefits that your mattress can give you.
Return Policy
A mattress is called a “consideration Purchase”. You’ll be investing a fair amount of money and time so the best thing you can find out everything about how the company handles returns. Is there a waiting period before you can return the mattress? Will you pay for a pick up?
Warranty Terms
Look for a warranty period of at least 10 years. Ideally, you want a warranty that is not prorated, which means the amount of coverage doesn’t change the longer you own the mattress.
